Aviv Regev, PhD, Head and Executive Vice President of Genentech Research and Early Development, presented “From Cell Atlases to Medicines, with AI” on May 12, as the annual Monroe J. Schlesinger Lecturer, one of two named lectures sponsored by the BIDMC Department of Pathology each year. She leads an active research lab focused on developing and applying experimental methods and computational algorithms to decipher intra- and intercellular circuits within tissues. Dr. Regev earned her PhD in Computational Biology from Tel Aviv University. She is also a founding co-chair of the Human Cell Atlas. Dr. Regev walked the audience through her more than 10-year journey to discover how AI could find patterns in the layers of data from cells, genes, tissues, and their connections. Pathologists from across Harvard Medical School institutions of BIDMC, Boston Children's Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Mass General Hospital, and Brigham and Women's Hospital gave presentations, shared research insights, and contributed to a poster session during the annual 2026 HMS Pathology Research Retreat on May 29 at Simmons College. Starting June 15, HMFP faculty are helping lead Heat Emergencies: Prevention, Diagnosis, and Management, a virtual Harvard Medical School CME course designed to equip clinicians with practical, evidence-based approaches to caring for patients affected by extreme heat. This multi-part course takes place over 4 afternoons (June 15, 17, 22, 24), and features a multidisciplinary faculty, including BIDMC emergency medicine physicians and climate health experts, along with national leaders in emergency medicine, public health and climate science. As temperatures rise around the world, so do concerns about the impact of extreme heat on pregnancy. New research led by Blair Wylie, MD, MPH, Chair of the BIDMC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, found that humid heat exposure during pregnancy was associated with increased odds of preterm birth, but this elevated risk was not observed among participants who took low-dose aspirin early in pregnancy.
