About Psychiatry

Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center's (HMFP) Department of Psychiatry is committed to providing the highest quality psychiatric services to all who receive their care at the medical center, to advancing the understanding of causes and mechanisms of psychiatric illness and developing new treatments for them, and to training the workforce to address unmet behavioral health needs. The department’s residency program in psychiatry, internship in psychology, fellowships in neuropsychology, consultation psychiatry, and community psychiatry, together bring approximately 60 trainees into the department, typically for multi-year programs. These are all highly competitive programs that contribute to the current mental health care workforce, while training future leaders in the field. In addition, the department serves as one of the four primary sites for Harvard Medical School (HMS) students who are getting their first month-long clinical experience in psychiatry.

The department is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and to removing structural barriers to excellent care, educational opportunities, and the pursuit of science.
