Dr. Bala Subramaniam and his team at the Sadhguru Center for a Conscious Planet have been awarded a multimillion-dollar award from the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Group (PCORI) for a new study, “SCOPE Trial,” that will test a novel intervention involving prehabilitation with sleep enhancement, cognitive exercise, and extended postoperative analgesia to reduce post-operative delirium. Dr. Subramaniam will lead this multicenter trial done in collaboration with MGH, Columbia, and Ohio State University. This grant was selected for PCORI funding through a highly competitive review process in which patients and other stakeholders joined clinician scientists to evaluate the proposals. The SCOPE trial will provide important evidence that can potentially decrease postoperative delirium in heart surgery patients. PCORI is an independent, nonprofit organization authorized by Congress in 2010.

The Center for Medical Simulation (CME) entered into an agreement in September, 2023 to merge with the Beth Israel Anesthesia Foundation of HMFP, the research and education arm of the BIDMC Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine. CMS, a Boston-based non-profit organization, leads in the area of using real-life simulated situations to teach clinicians to handle medical crises without putting patients at risk. This merger is a recognition of the BIDMC Anesthesia Department’s expertise in medical simulation and status as a leader in state-of-the-art clinical care, innovative research and exceptional anesthesia education. It will allow them to pool their resources with this highly respected center and open opportunities for further ground-breaking education and research in medical simulation.
A new retrospective cohort study published online in the September, 2023 issue of Anesthesiology is the first to link use of phenylephrine, a drug commonly used to control intraoperative hypotension, with higher incidence of postoperative delirium compared to ephedrine. The study, first-authored by Dr. Haobo Ma and Elena Ahrens, and senior-authored by Dr. Maximilian Schaefer, indicated 34% higher odds of postoperative delirium in the phenylephrine group when compared with a group given another vasopressor, ephedrine. Delirium after surgery is associated with poor outcomes, including longer hospital stay, long-term cognitive decline and a 1.5-fold higher risk of one-year mortality.
