Steven Freedman, MD, PhD, has assumed the role of Vice Chair for Promotions and Faculty Advancement for the Department of Medicine. In his 40-plus-year tenure at BIDMC and as faculty in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, Dr. Freedman has continually demonstrated a deep commitment to the core values of our Department and has been extraordinary in his development of new research, clinical, and educational programs, always designed to strengthen and support our faculty and trainees. The literary magazine is produced by the Katherine Swan Ginsburg Humanism in Medicine Program at BIDMC, and co-editors Katherine Holland, MD; Nadia Safar, MD; Megan Sinik, MD; and Jon Crocker, MD, who is also the director of the Humanism in Medicine Program.

The Department of Medicine is thrilled to share Jennifer Potter, MD, has assumed the role of Dean for Students in the Program in Medical Education at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Potter is a world-class clinician and medical educator, who has been deeply committed to our HMS learners. She has served as Interim Dean for Students since October 2025 through a period of transition, and HMS is excited to have Dr. Potter continue to lead the Office of Student Affairs with characteristic warmth, judgment, and steadiness. Kenneth Mukamal, MD, MPH, MA, has assumed the role of Vice Chair for Career Development and Mentoring for the Department of Medicine. A 32-year faculty member and Associate Section Chief for Research in the Division of General Medicine, Dr. Mukamal will support the career growth of our faculty at all levels, accomplished through one-on-one academic counseling sessions, re-evaluation of the annual review and mentorship processes in our Divisions, and continued implementation of an equitable and transparent approach to academic promotion across the Department.
