Sickle Cell Trait, Inequity, and the Need for Change
Because of misperceptions about risks, people with sickle cell trait (SCT) in the U.S. may receive inequitable and potentially harmful treatment, with implications for autonomy, privacy, and justice. This article calls out the discriminatory practices related to mandatory SCT testing by the NCAA and US military. SCT has also been used in troubling ways in forensic determination of cause of death and in managing stem cell transplant donors.
