Welcome Chairs of Neurosurgery and Surgery
HMFP and BIDMC are excited to welcome two new physician leaders who have joined us. In addition to furthering our clinical, research, and educational missions, they will have leading roles in the Dana-Farber Beth Israel Deaconess Cancer Collaboration.
Gavin P. Dunn, MD, PhD, Inaugural Chair, Department of Neurosurgery, BIDMC
A renowned neurosurgeon and researcher, Dr. Dunn specializes in neurosurgical oncology. Prior to joining HMFP and BIDMC, he served as Director of the Brain Tumor Immunology and Immunotherapy Program at Massachusetts General Hospital, where his clinical practice focused on caring for patients with primary and metastatic brain cancers, as well as general neurosurgical conditions. Dr. Dunn’s NIH-funded research focuses on understanding the immune response to brain tumors and the fundamental basis of CNS immunobiology.

Seth Karp, MD, Chair of the Roberta and Stephen R. Weiner Department of Surgery, BIDMC, and Chair of Surgery, DFCI
Prior to joining HMFP and BIDMC, Dr. Karp served as Chair of the Section of Surgical Sciences and System Surgeon-in-Chief at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and is nationally known for his expertise in liver transplantation and the use of marginal grafts, as well as general surgery in patients with liver disease. He also previously served as the Director of the Pancreas Transplant and the Transplant Fellowship Training Programs at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
“HMFP is honored and excited to welcome Dr. Dunn, and welcome back Dr. Karp to our community,” said President and CEO, Alexa B. Kimball, MD, MPH. “They are both extraordinarily talented surgeons, researchers and educators, with mission-driven commitments to excellence and patient care.”
