Samantha DeAndrade, MD, MPH, Selected for the 2026 Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Fellowship

Samantha DeAndrade, MD, MPH, of our Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery Division, has been selected for the 2026 Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Fellowship through the Harvard Medical School Eleanor and Miles Shore Faculty Development Awards Program.

This fellowship provides protected time to pursue academic work, and Dr. DeAndrade will use it to lead her research project, “Feasibility of Using AI to Generate Patient Education Videos for Non-English Speakers in a Urogynecology Clinic.”

The study will explore whether AI/LLM technology can create reliable patient education videos in non-English languages, helping to bridge a real gap in care. Even when professional interpreters are used, research shows that patients often report reduced understanding and a reduced ability to participate in shared decision-making. By offering a short video in a patient’s primary language, the research team hopes to improve comprehension and, ultimately, the care experience.

If successful, the LLM platform could be scaled to produce educational content in hundreds of languages, a potentially transformative tool for health equity. Collaborators in the study include Nicole P. Chappell, MD, of our Division of Gynecologic Oncology, and Roger Lefevre, MD, MBA, and William Winkelman, MD, of our Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery Division.
