Carlo Rosen, MD, Named Emergency Medicine Chief and Chair
After a national search, HMFP and BIDMC are pleased to share that Carlo L. Rosen, MD, has been named the new Chief and Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at BIDMC, effective immediately. Prior to assuming this new role, Dr. Rosen served as Interim Chief, and previously served as Executive Vice Chair, overseeing the HMFP Emergency Medicine Network, which includes eight emergency departments and five urgent care centers that care for more than 350,000 patients annually.

He is the founding program director of the BIDMC Harvard Affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency, which he led for 22 years, earning national recognition. He has also served as Vice Chair of Education in the department and Associate Graduate Medical Director at BIDMC.
Dr. Rosen’s research focuses on trauma care in the Emergency Department, diagnostic imaging, care for older trauma patients, and pathways for managing mild traumatic brain injury. He has also studied diagnostic error and malpractice risk in emergency medicine and is dedicated to improving quality and safety in the field. He is an associate editor of The Clinical Practice of Emergency Medicine (4th–7th editions).
Dr. Rosen earned both his undergraduate and medical degrees from Columbia University and holds the rank of Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School. He will lead the department as we progress with the Dana-Farber Beth Israel Deaconess Cancer Collaboration. Dr. Rosen’s exceptional talent and accomplishments within the field of emergency medicine will advance our research, education, and patient care efforts significantly.
