Theodore (Ted) Hong, MD, named new Radiation Oncology Vice Chair
Theodore (Ted) Hong, MD, will join us in September as the new vice chair of integration and operations in the Department of Radiation Oncology at BIDMC, and Professor of Radiation Oncology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Hong will also serve as vice chair of integration and collaboration operations of Radiation Oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute as part of the Dana-Farber Beth Israel Deaconess Cancer Collaboration.
In these newly created roles, Dr. Hong will be responsible for developing, communicating, and driving the vision, mission, and goals of the program, as well as oversight of clinical operations, quality and safety programs, basic, translational, and clinical research, education programs, and faculty development. He will be instrumental in ensuring the highest quality patient care and fostering a culture that nurtures teaching and clinical and basic research.
Dr. Hong is an accomplished clinician, teacher, researcher and leader. For the last 20 years, he has served as a staff physician in Radiation Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Director of the hospital’s gastrointestinal service with the Department of Radiation Oncology and Co-Director of the Tucker Gosnell Center for Gastrointestinal Cancers. He also currently serves as Vice Chair of Research for Mass General Brigham Enterprise Radiation Oncology and Senior Clinical Investigator within Mass General Brigham’s Data Science Office. Beginning in 2006 until earlier this year, Dr. Hong directed MGH’s Gastrointestinal Radiation Oncology Resident Rotation at MGH and, from 2022 until 2024, was Vice Chair for Research and Scientific Affairs at MGH. He has held the position of Professor of Radiation Oncology from Harvard Medical School since 2018.
A respected researcher, Dr. Hong has served as principal investigator on more than 20 investigator-initiated trials, has received two National Cancer Institute project grants studying proton therapy, and is the author of more than 200 peer-reviewed academic papers. Dr. Hong has also held numerous national and international leadership roles, including Chair of the National Cancer Institute’s Rectal-Anal Cancer Task Force, Chair of the Data Safety Monitoring Committee for PANOVA-3 at Novocure, and Chair of NRG Oncology’s Non-colorectal Gastrointestinal Committee. Since 2005, he has been a member of the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center’s GCC Clinical Research Committee. Dr. Hong serves on the editorial board of Surgical Oncology and as Section Editor, Radiation Oncology of The Oncologist and Senior Editor, Radiation Oncology of Clinical Cancer Research.
Dr. Hong received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from Harvard University and his medical degree from the University of Connecticut Medical School. He completed his residency and internship training at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics.
